Fall and Spring is mushroom season! Fungus is continuously present under ground or within hosts. When the conditions are just right (generally Fall and Spring) their fruiting bodies emerge in order to release spores which will then fly off to find new hosts. We know these fruiting bodies as ‘mushrooms’.
From the wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, to the amusing common names, and to the ever-present question about edibility vs poisonous, mushrooms have fascinated humans for centuries.
Fall and Spring are great time to explore Silver Falls for mushroom hunting! Be sure to bring a good trail guide with you and never consume anything without being 100% positive of the identification. Especially in mushrooms, there are oodles of look-alikes. In many instances, the only way to determine a toxic mushroom from an edible one is a spore test. As always, know your stuff and be safe out there!
